Sifteo meets world

Posted January 19th, 2010 by Brent under News

We’ve had our new site and blog up for a few weeks now, but today we’re happy to officially announce Sifteo!

Last year Siftables was a research project initiated at the MIT Media Lab. Since then we have all finished our graduate work, and last summer we formed a start-up company called Sifteo. With support from True Ventures and the National Science Foundation, we are now hard at work developing the next generation of the technology to bring our vision of Siftables to the world.

In the past year we’ve received an overwhelming and international positive response. We’ve heard about the TED video being used in workshops and classrooms, and forwarded among friends, family, parents, students, teachers, and co-workers. Your support and feedback have been invaluable, and we are excited to be in contact with so many people who not only understand the potential of Siftables, but want to help us make them a reality on coffee tables, playgrounds and desks around the world.

This year we’ll be creating games, reaching out to developers, working with manufacturers, and running beta tests with players. We look forward to continuing to get to know everyone, and to working with you to create the future of play.

In addition to following the Sifteo blog, there are other ways you can keep tabs on Siftables activity: subscribe to our mailing listfollow us on Twitter (@Sifteo), or become a Fan on Facebook! And please keep sharing Siftables with the people you know who will see the possibilities.

Sincerely,
The Sifteo Team

I hope you are investigating some partnerships to thinking through the implications for using Siftables to reach and teach kids with autism and other cognitive disabilities. The implications for the many ways they could be used to help teach communication, social skills, academics, etc., are simply staggering. My mind is racing….

I am truly impresse by the engineering capabilities of this technology. Deciding on a major for college what would i need to do in order to become a part of the sifteo team?
I cannot wait to have my own set of siftables to work with as they appear truly remarkable.

Just wondering, is an official SDK going to be released for designers and developers who want to write apps for this?

  17. 17 Brent said at 12:19 pm on February 15th, 2010:

@tom, we do have an internal, high-level API for game and application developers, and we expect to release an official SDK in the future.

@John, yep, we are thinking along these lines as well.

@Quillan, if you’re interested in someday creating products like Siftables, it’s probably best to study multiple disciplines. Mix two or more of computer science, psychology, product design, visual art & design, game design, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and so on.

    Hello
Just want to say siftables are fantastic as a teaching tool especially since today’s students know the technology better than most teachers do. Where can I purchase a set to use in teaching my subject content? I see the future of education of the nations youth changing drastically and as a teacher I need to keep up with my students or at least be knowledgable.
